Required Documents to Apply for an Indian Passport

The Indian passport is a very important document while traveling abroad. It is your key identification document. But you can not just apply and get an indian passport. To get an indian passport, you need to provide some documents. Then the Ministry of External Affairs evaluates your passport application and decides whether to issue or not issue your indian passport.

Address Proof (Submit any one)

  • Electricity Bill / Water Bill / Telephone Bill
  • Voter ID
  • Bank Account Statement
  • Gas Connection Bill
  • Income Tax Assessment Order
  • Rental Agreement

Date of Birth Proof (Submit any one)

  • Aadhaar Card / E-Aadhaar
  • PAN Card
  • Driving Licence
  • Birth Certificate

Photo ID Proof (Submit any one)

  • Aadhaar Card / E-Aadhaar
  • PAN Card
  • Voter ID

  • Two recent passport-size photos with white background

Old Passport (if any)

  • Two recent passport-size photos with white background

Additional Documents

  • As per individual case. Check Passport Seva website for special cases like name change, marriage, government employees, etc.

  • Birth Certificate of the minor
  • Address Proof (in parents' name)
  • Proof of Parents' Citizenship
  • Recent passport-sized photos of the minor
  • Annexure D (Declaration by both parents/guardians)
  • Annexure C (For minors aged 15 to 18)
  • Self-attested and original copies of parents' passports (if available)
  • If one parent is absent: notarized affidavit from the unavailable parent

  • Additional documents based on the reason for reissue (e.g., address change, expiry, etc.)

Basic Documents

  • Age Proof (Aadhaar / PAN / Birth Certificate).
  • Address Proof
  • Two passport-size photos (4.5 cm x 3.5 cm, white background)
  • Annexure E (Declaration - no criminal record, citizenship, family details)
  • Tatkaal fee receipt
  • Self-attested copies of first & last two pages of old passport (if any)

Additional: Submit any 3 of the following (if age >18)

  • Voter ID (EPIC)
  • Updated Bank / Kisan / Post Office Passbook
  • Student ID from a recognized institute

  • Certificate by Head of Office (download format from Passport Seva site)
  • Official Request Letter from Forwarding Officer (format available online)
  • Political/PMO Clearance (if applicable)
  • If retiring soon: Undertaking from office
  • For re-issue: Original diplomatic/official passport + surrender/cancellation certificate

  • Check the official Passport Seva website (www.passportindia.gov.in) for the latest document requirements.
  • Carry original documents for verification and self-attested copies for submission.
  • Book an Appointment at the nearest PSK or RPO via the Passport Seva portal to avoid any unexpected delays.
  • Double-check all details in the application form to avoid rejection.
