Renewing Your Passport Online and Offline

A passport is one of the most important documents whole traveling out of India. It is your proof of identity and nationality. Ordinary indian passports are issued with a validity of 10 years. Before ending this period, all passport holders are required to renew their passports. You can apply for a passport renewal one year before the passport expiry date. Indian passports have a simple and straightforward renewal process.

The Passport Seva website (www.passportindia.gov.in) offers a very quick and convenient way to renew your indian passport. Follow these steps:

  1. Visit Passport Seva: Open the official Passport Seva website (www.passportindia.gov.in) .
  2. Log In: Enter your login ID or other required details to log in or register as a new user.
  3. Select Re-issue: Click on “Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport” and enter the reason for renewal.
  4. Fill Details: Enter address, spouse info, and two local references.
  5. Validate & Save: Recheck the entered details, validate, and save the form.
  6. Upload Form: Upload the saved form for auto-filled application.
  7. Review & Submit: Verify details carefully, because you won't be able to change them after the submission.
  8. Book Appointment: Click on ‘View Saved/Submitted Application,’ select a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK), and choose any time slot.
  9. Pay Fees: Use net banking, cards, or an offline challan (takes 2 days) to pay the fee. Fees: ~₹1,500 (36 pages), ~₹2,000 (60 pages).
  10. Print Receipt: Collect the Application Reference Number (ARN) and Print Application Receipt.

Tracking: Use your Passport Seva login and ARN to check your passport status online. For an ordinary passport, it can take from 10 to 15 days and Tatkaal only takes from 1 to 3 days.

Indian passport holders can also apply offline for Passport Renewal:

  • Access Website: Visit www.passportindia.gov.in and go to 'Forms and Affidavits.'
  • Print: Download and print the re-issuance form (PDF) on an A4 sheet.
  • Fill Form: Fill the form by entering every required detail.
  • Submit the Form: Hand in the form, photos, and required documents at the District Passport Cell (DPC) or Regional Passport Office. You can also get the passport renewal forms at the DPC.
  • Pay Fees: Pay the fee via a demand draft (~₹1,500 for 36 pages, ~₹2,000 for 60 pages).
  • Get Acknowledgement: Get the Acknowledgement letter with a file number to track the passport reissuance online.

The applicants need the following documents to renew their passports:

  • Old Passport
  • Signed Copies of Passport Pages
    • Make photocopies of:
      • The first two pages and the last two pages of your passport (which have your personal details).
      • The ECR/Non-ECR page.
      • Any observation page (if the passport office added special notes).
      • Any validity extension page (if your passport was a Short Validity Passport, or SVP).
    • Sign each copy yourself to show they're real (this is called self-attestation).
