How to Change Name on Passport

It is very easy for the passport holder to change their indian passport name. It can be done through the Passport Seva Portal. A passport spelling mistake in the name might cause you problems at Immigration, make it difficult to book hotel bookings, and make Reservations. Here are the simple steps to change the name on an indian passport:

• Visit the official Passport Seva Portal.
• Register or log in to your account.
• Click on the option Reissue of Passport (because after the name change, you will be issued a new passport booklet).

• Choose Apply for Fresh Passport/Reissue of Passport.
• Fill out the online application form, selecting the reason for reissue as Change in Personal Particulars (e.g., change of name).
• Provide details of the new name and other required information.
• You can also download the e-Form, fill it offline, and upload it.

Prepare the following documents (originals and self-attested copies):

• For All Name Changes:
  • Current passport (original and copy).
  • Proof of address (e.g., Aadhaar card, utility bill).
  • Proof of identity (e.g., PAN card, voter ID).
  • Two recent passport-sized photographs.
• For Name Change After Marriage:
  • Marriage certificate (original and copy).
  • Spouse’s passport (if applicable).
  • Annexure D (affidavit for name change after marriage, available on the Passport Seva website).
• For Spelling Corrections (e.g., passport spelling mistake):
  • Any document showing the correct name (e.g., birth certificate, Aadhaar card, or educational certificate).
• For Legal Name Changes:
  • Gazette notification of name change (published in the Official Gazette of India).
  • Newspaper advertisements announcing the name change (published in two local newspapers).

All of these documents should be self-attested.

• Book an appointment at the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Regional Passport Office (RPO) via the Passport Seva Portal.
• Select a convenient date and time.
• Pay the applicable fee online (normal or Tatkaal mode):
  • Normal fee: ₹1,500 (36 pages) or ₹2,000 (60 pages).
  • Tatkaal fee: ₹3,500 (36 pages) or ₹4,000 (60 pages).

• Be present at your registered address for passport police verification.

• Now you can track your application status on the Passport Seva Portal just by entering the Application Reference Number (ARN).
• Your passport with the updated name will be dispatched to your registered address after the approval.
• Processing time:
  • Normal: 30-45 days.
  • Tatkaal: 3-7 days (varies based on the verification).

It is mandatory to change your name on an Indian passport.
