Axis Bank Updates Airtel Credit Card: Cashback Capping Revised & Lounge Access Removed

Axis Bank has announced important changes to the Airtel Axis Bank Credit Card, effective 12 April 2026. While the cashback rates remain the same, the way you earn and use cashback will change significantly.

Additionally, the complimentary lounge access benefit has been removed, making this a notable devaluation for cardholders.

Cashback Rates Remain Same, But Capping Changes

The core cashback structure is unchanged:

  • 25% cashback on Airtel mobile, broadband & DTH payments (via Airtel Thanks App)
  • 10% cashback on utility bill payments (via Airtel Thanks App)

However, the monthly cashback cap logic has changed.

New Cashback Capping Rule

Earlier:

  • Flat cap of ₹250 per month on accelerated categories

Now:

  • 25% cashback cap = 2X of base cashback (1%) earned in that month
  • 10% cashback cap = equal to base cashback earned

Simple Example

If in a month you:

  • Spend ₹50,000 on regular categories
  • Earn ₹500 base cashback (1%)

Then:

  • Max 25% cashback = ₹1,000
  • Max 10% cashback = ₹500

This means your cashback now depends on how much you spend on non-accelerated categories.

Changes in Accelerated Cashback Brands

Axis Bank has also updated partner brands under the 10% category.

Earlier Brands

  • Swiggy
  • Zomato
  • BigBasket

New Brands (From April 2026)

  • Blinkit
  • Zomato
  • District Movies

Updated Benefit Structure

  • 10% value-back (not direct cashback)
  • Capped at ₹200 per month per brand
  • Provided in brand wallet (not credit card statement)

Important Conditions

  • Minimum spend: ₹499 (for Zomato & Blinkit)
  • Not applicable on wallet loads & gift cards
  • No expiry on credited wallet balance

Cashback Format Changed

Another major change:

  • Earlier: Cashback credited to card statement
  • Now: Value-back credited to brand wallets

This reduces flexibility, as you can only use rewards on specific platforms.

Lounge Access Benefit Removed

Previously:

  • 4 complimentary domestic lounge visits per year

Now:

  • Lounge access discontinued completely from 12 April 2026

This is a major drawback, especially for users who used this card for travel benefits.

Impact on Cardholders

Negative Changes

  • Cashback flexibility reduced (wallet-based rewards)
  • Lounge access removed
  • More complex cashback calculation

What Still Works

  • High cashback rate on Airtel payments
  • Utility bill savings still available
  • Useful for Airtel-heavy users

Should You Continue Using This Card?

Continue If:

  • You spend heavily on Airtel services
  • You use Blinkit, Zomato regularly
  • You are okay with wallet-based rewards

Consider Alternatives If:

  • You want simple cashback (direct statement credit)
  • Lounge access is important
  • You prefer flexible rewards

Bottom Line

The Airtel Axis Bank Credit Card has seen a clear devaluation. While cashback rates remain unchanged, the new capping rules, brand restrictions, and wallet-based rewards reduce overall usability.

The removal of lounge access further lowers the card’s value, especially for travel users.

It still works well for Airtel users, but for others, it may be worth exploring better cashback or travel cards.
